The Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, has reacted to the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a military officer identified as Yerima in Abuja. According to the Defence Chief, the officer’s response in the heated exchange exemplified “the courage of a disciplined soldier,” emphasizing that every soldier possesses an element of fearlessness that drives them to confront danger rather than retreat from it.
General Oluyede noted that the Nigerian Defence Academy does not train timid or docile officers. He praised the officer’s calm and measured response during the incident, describing it as a display of emotional intelligence and professionalism — key attributes instilled in every military leader. The ability to remain composed and courteous in the face of provocation, he said, underscores the depth of military discipline and training.
The Defence Chief, however, expressed disappointment over the conduct of the minister, describing it as inappropriate and unbecoming of a public official. He stressed that government representatives should exhibit restraint and respect, particularly when interacting with members of the Armed Forces who dedicate their lives to national service and sacrifice.
Concluding his remarks, General Oluyede stated that the incident would be reviewed under his authority. He assured that the matter would receive due scrutiny, reaffirming the military’s commitment to upholding professionalism and respect within and beyond its ranks.
