The Jigawa State Government has announced a significant revision of monthly stipends for ward heads — traditional grassroots leaders who help implement government programmes and maintain community order. Previously paid ₦3,000, the allowance has now been increased to ₦10,000 per month.
The decision was approved during a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Umar Namadi earlier this week. State officials said the move was aimed at recognising the vital role ward heads play in local administration and improving their capacity to serve communities effectively.
Officials described the increase as part of a broader effort to ensure grassroots leaders are better supported amid rising economic pressures. Ward heads — often referred to locally as Maiunguwa — act as the first point of contact between government policies and residents in villages and wards across the state.
Observers say the enhanced allowance may help strengthen traditional governance structures and encourage stronger collaboration between government authorities and local leaders. However, some community members have called for further measures to improve rural infrastructure and services alongside the pay rise.
The council also approved new funding measures for rural development projects, signalling a broader focus on boosting economic and social wellbeing in Jigawa’s communities.
