Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has passed away in London, United Kingdom, following a prolonged period of worsening health, family and medical sources confirmed on Friday.

Obiano, aged 69, had been receiving treatment for severe heart failure and complications arising from urinary cancer before his condition sharply deteriorated.

A senior family member, who requested anonymity, described his final hours as heartbreaking, saying the sudden decline left the family devastated.

“His health had been deteriorating for months, but the final collapse was unexpected. We are deeply saddened,” the source said.

Medical staff in London also confirmed that the former governor had been in intensive care prior to his death, noting that “he fought until the very end.”

Obiano, who led Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022, was standing trial on a nine-count money laundering charge involving the alleged diversion of N4 billion in state funds. The case, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had recently been reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the next hearing slated for November 25.
