Former Chelsea midfielder, Craig Burley, has criticised Manchester United’s goalkeepers, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, following the club’s shocking defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Speaking on ESPN alongside ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, Burley argued that both goalkeepers should have been left behind in Grimsby after what he described as another night of poor displays between the posts.
Grimsby stunned United by taking a 2-0 lead within the first half hour, before the Red Devils fought back to level 2-2. The game eventually went to penalties, where Grimsby triumphed 12-11 despite Onana saving one spot-kick.
“Two big mistakes from Onana tonight. I’ve always said I’d pick him ahead of Bayindir, but after this performance, I’m not so sure,” Hislop remarked. Burley went further, saying, “You might as well leave both of them in Grimsby. Buy them a house and tell them to stay there “.
