Liverpool midfielder James McConnell has signed a new long-term contract with the club before joining Dutch giants Ajax on loan for the 2025/26 season.
The 20-year-old will link up with former Liverpool coach John Heitinga, now in charge at Ajax, as well as Reds goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who is also on loan in Amsterdam.
McConnell, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland at U15 level, has risen through the ranks of the club’s Academy to make 13 senior appearances so far. He made his debut under former manager Jürgen Klopp in October 2023 during a Europa League clash with Toulouse at Anfield.
The young midfielder impressed in his breakthrough season, registering an assist against Norwich City in the FA Cup and playing a part in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2024. Last season, under new manager Arne Slot, he featured four times, including his first Champions League appearance against PSV Eindhoven in January.
Ajax, who finished runners-up in the Eredivisie last term, have started their new campaign strongly with seven points from their opening three matches. They are also set to compete in the league phase of this season’s UEFA Champions League.
McConnell’s move is expected to provide him with valuable top-flight and European experience as he continues his development.
