A new legislative performance scorecard has placed Hon. Obi Aguocha (Umuahia North/Ikwuano/Umuahia South Federal Constituency) and Hon. Ben Kalu (Bende Federal Constituency) at the forefront of Abia’s representatives in the House of Representatives between June 2023 and May 2024.

The report released by OrderPaper Nigeria has caught the attention of many observers on the exceptional performance of Hon. Obi Aguocha, who as a first-time lawmaker, has already sponsored 12 bills in his debut year. All his bills are currently awaiting second reading, a feat that surpasses several veteran lawmakers.

Political analysts have hailed Aguocha’s efforts as a sign of a new breed of leadership in the Green Chamber.

“For a first-timer to sponsor 12 bills within a single legislative year is not just impressive, it’s groundbreaking. Hon. Aguocha has shown that dedication and fresh ideas can match and even outpace experience,” said Dr. Ifeanyi Nwosu, a public affairs commentator.

Constituents in Umuahia and Ikwuano have also expressed pride in his early strides.

“We sent him to Abuja to be our voice, and he has proven in just one year that he is not there to warm the benches. Hon. Aguocha is already making us proud,” said Mrs. Uche Onyemachi, a community leader from Ikwuano.

In contrast, several Abia representatives underperformed in terms of bill sponsorship. Hon. Ibe Osonwa (Arochukwu/Ohafia) and Hon. Onwusibe Obinna (Isiala Ngwa North/South) sponsored two bills each, Hon. Nkwonta Chris (Ukwa East/West) presented three, while Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh (Aba North/South), Hon. Godwin Ogah (Isuikwuato/Umunneochi), and Hon. Ikechi Alozie (Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo) all recorded zero bills during the review period.

The report makes clear that while Ben Kalu remains the towering legislative figure sponsoring an unprecedented 90 bills, with many already progressing significantly, including some signed into law. His track record cements his position as a legislative giant and one of the most productive lawmakers in Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly, Obi Aguocha has emerged as the rising star, proving that even first-time lawmakers can be pace-setters in the National Assembly.
