Lagos State is gearing up to make history as the first African city to host the E1 Series electric boat racing championship, scheduled for October 4–5, 2025.

The announcement was made during a press briefing on Monday, where Rodi Basso, CEO of the E1 Series, praised Lagos’ successful bid against top global cities. He described the event as “a major milestone for sport, sustainability, and commerce in Africa,” noting that the boating industry is evolving to embrace innovation and environmentally friendly technology.

Basso explained that the E1 Series demonstrates how technical expertise and alternative power solutions can reshape boating for a sustainable future. The partnership with the Lagos State Government is expected to strengthen this innovation-driven sport while attracting international investment in both the sporting and entertainment industries.

Speaking at the briefing, Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, said the championship would showcase Lagos’ cultural energy, tourism potential, and global standing. “For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this proves our capacity to host world-class events. We are racing for the future, for Africa, for the world,” he said.

Commissioners Toke Benson-Awoyinka (Tourism, Arts and Culture) and Oluwaseun Osiyemi (Transportation) highlighted the economic opportunities for artisans, traders, fishermen, and the hospitality sector, while also unveiling the Omi Eko Project, which will deploy 72 electric boats to ease traffic and advance sustainable transport.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, reaffirmed the state’s readiness to deliver an event that aligns with the THEMES+ agenda, boosts revenue, and cements Lagos’ reputation on the global stage. Veteran sports journalists have also hailed the championship as a transformative moment for both African sport and investment.
