The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives while 10 others sustained injuries in two separate accidents along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the first crash occurred around 9 a.m. at the Ozalla/4-Corner axis when a Howo truck carrying cement from Aba to Abuja collided with a Toyota Corolla attempting to overtake another truck. A Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet minibus, both driving one-way, were also involved.
“The truck’s head and the Toyota Corolla went up in flames, burning five occupants of the car to death, while one passenger in the minibus also died,” Ndukwe stated.
The second crash happened around 3 p.m. on the same road when a Sino truck, also laden with cement and driving against traffic, rammed into a tricycle, killing four occupants who were later confirmed dead in hospital.
Ndukwe added that 10 people injured in the two incidents are receiving treatment.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Bitrus Giwa, described the accidents as avoidable and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the Motor Traffic Department to investigate the causes while cautioning motorists against reckless driving.
The CP further urged drivers to obey traffic rules and prioritize safety, especially during the ember months when road accidents are more frequent.
