Jonathan: Nigerian Politics Marred by Betrayals

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lamented the culture of dishonesty and betrayal that, according to him, defines Nigeria’s political landscape.

Jonathan made the remarks in Benin City on Thursday at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and ex-Deputy Governor of Edo State, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe.

He described Ogiadomhe as a rare ally whose loyalty remained unwavering even during the most turbulent moments of his presidency.

“One of the few friends who stood firmly by me when I became president is Mike,” Jonathan said. “You know politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. It is hard to find someone who says the same thing in the morning and still means it in the evening. I witnessed a lot of betrayals, especially during the 2015 elections. But Mike is someone who would take a bullet on my behalf. His word is one you can take to the bank, unlike most politicians whose words change by the hour.”

Representing Governor Monday Okpebholo at the event, Edo State Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa lauded Ogiadomhe’s contributions to governance, saying the foundation he laid as deputy governor remains a guiding model for the state.

Also paying tribute, former Governor Lucky Igbinedion recalled entrusting Ogiadomhe with state affairs whenever he traveled abroad, describing him as a dependable and committed deputy.

Former Edo State governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole, praised Ogiadomhe’s steadfast loyalty to Jonathan, noting that he always made it clear where his political allegiance lay. He further commended Ogiadomhe’s wife, Louisa, for her unwavering support.

The celebration attracted an array of dignitaries, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor, Adams Oshiomhole, and Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State. Others in attendance were former deputy governors Rev. Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu, and Marvelous Omobayo; Chief Judge of Edo State Daniel Okungbowa; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; traditional rulers; and several other notable personalities.
