Former England international Danny Mills has suggested that Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha never played for Premier League giants like Arsenal or Manchester United because of his unique style of play. The Nigerian maestro, celebrated for his flair and creativity, built his career across clubs such as Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, and later Paris Saint-Germain before making his mark in England with Bolton Wanderers.
Despite thrilling fans with his dazzling skills, Okocha never got the opportunity to represent one of the biggest teams in English football. Mills, reflecting on this, said that top clubs of the era may have struggled to integrate a free-spirited player like Okocha into their structured systems, even though he had the talent to shine alongside elite players.
Speaking to Complete Sports, Mills said Okocha could have achieved even more if he had featured at Arsenal or Manchester United. “Can you imagine if he’d been in an Arsenal or at Man United of that time? He could have been even better, because of the quality of players around him,” Mills remarked.
He added that Okocha’s individuality may have been a barrier for top clubs. “Maybe the fact that he was such a maverick and an individual, some of those clubs thought, ‘how do we accommodate him into a team’? But yeah, Jay-Jay Okocha was absolutely sensational,” Mills concluded.
