The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stirred confusion within its ranks after issuing two conflicting letters to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the conduct of state congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States.
In a letter dated Thursday, September 25, 2025, and signed by the PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, the party announced the postponement of the congresses, citing “unforeseen circumstances and operational logistic challenges.” The correspondence, received by INEC on September 26, noted that new dates would be communicated later.
However, less than 24 hours later, another letter—dated Friday, September 26, and signed by PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu—contradicted the earlier position. This second communication confirmed that the congresses would hold as initially scheduled, stressing that only letters jointly signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary should be recognized by INEC.
The conflicting messages have fueled speculation about a lack of coordination within the PDP leadership, with analysts warning that the development could heighten internal tensions, particularly in the three affected states where preparations for the congresses are already at an advanced stage.
INEC has yet to issue a formal statement clarifying whether the congresses will proceed or be postponed.
