Arsenal staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Sunday, moving within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Nick Woltemade’s first-half header had put Newcastle in front, and the Gunners looked set for a fourth straight defeat at the ground. But substitute Mikel Merino equalised with a deft header before Gabriel Magalhaes powered in a 96th-minute corner to seal all three points.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed the result as a statement of intent in the title race. “To win in the manner that we have done it, wow, what a feeling. Today we had a beautiful moment at the end,” he said.
The victory came a day after Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season at Crystal Palace, offering Arsenal the chance to close the gap. Arteta praised his players’ resilience, noting the significance of winning at a stadium that has troubled them in recent years.
Despite dominating the second half, Arsenal relied on late impact from substitutes to unlock Newcastle’s defence. VAR played a role at both ends, overturning a penalty decision against Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and later sparing Arsenal when Gabriel blocked a cross with his arm.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted his side fell short. “Two really late goals here at home hurts. We have to reflect and acknowledge that we weren’t at our best,” he said.
The result lifts Arsenal to second place, while Newcastle remain in 15th with just one win from their opening six matches.
