The Kano State Government has instructed the State Hisbah Board to begin preparations for the mass wedding of about 2,000 couples under its ongoing marriage programme.
Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, disclosed this in a phone interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday. He confirmed that preparations would soon commence in line with the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
โWe are planning to organise a mass wedding for another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusufโs leadership,โ he said.
While the official date for the ceremony is yet to be announced, Aminudeen explained that there are laid-down procedures that all intending couples must follow. These include compulsory medical screenings to determine health status, covering tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use.
โAll intending couples must register and undergo the required medical screening. Anyone who fails to comply will be automatically disqualified,โ he added.
Governor Yusufโs administration reintroduced the mass wedding initiative to assist young women, widows, and divorceesโespecially those whose families cannot afford the costs associated with marriage. The scheme also aims to curb social vices such as prostitution and promote moral values across the state.
