Lagos State has been officially announced as the host of Nigeria’s first-ever National Intermediate Games, set to take place in 2026, according to the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The new multi-sport competition, one of the flagship projects under the NSC’s RHINSE programme, is designed to identify, monitor, and develop young athletes between the ages of 16 and 19. It aims to create a clear developmental pathway bridging the gap between grassroots sports and elite-level competitions in Nigeria.
Speaking on the initiative, NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, emphasized the need for a sustainable framework for talent discovery and development to ensure Nigeria’s long-term success on the global stage.
> “We are determined to achieve sustainable podium success at international competitions, but this can only happen if we establish the right structures. The Intermediate Games will play a crucial role in strengthening our talent development goals,” Dikko said.
He further stressed that every successful sports development system begins with a strong grassroots base, which the commission is now prioritizing under the directive of the President.
> “The foundation of lasting sports success is an effective grassroots system, and this is what we are now pursuing with renewed commitment,” he added.
Also commenting, NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, described the Intermediate Games as a deliberate response to challenges affecting athlete progression and age categorization within Nigeria’s sports structure.
> “With the National Youth Games and National Sports Festival already established, the Intermediate Games will bridge the gap between them. It will ensure our young athletes are better prepared before advancing to the elite level,” Olopade stated.
Olopade expressed appreciation to Lagos State for accepting to host the maiden edition, calling it a significant step in Nigeria’s sports development journey.
> “We are delighted that Lagos has agreed to host this historic first edition, which will stand as a major milestone in Nigeria’s sporting history,” he said.
The 2026 National Intermediate Games will serve as a vital development platform for athletes transitioning from youth competitions like the National Youth Games to senior events such as the National Sports Festival, ensuring a continuous and coordinated progression for the nation’s future champions.
