Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West, has encouraged Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, to remain united, disciplined, and focused as they gear up for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The team arrived safely in Casablanca on Wednesday after a four-hour, twenty-minute flight from Abuja, ahead of the global competition set to kick off on October 17.
Before their departure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the Flamingos met with Taribo West, who offered words of motivation and a heartfelt prayer for their success.
The former Inter Milan and AC Milan star, well known for his strong faith and fiery passion, urged the girls to emulate — and even surpass — the achievements of the Super Falcons, who lifted the WAFCON trophy in July.
“Be very disciplined. I’ll be watching you wherever I am and praying for you. I believe you will bring the trophy home, just like your elder sisters did,” West told the players.
He emphasized the importance of obedience and self-control, stressing that professionalism begins with discipline. “Always pay close attention to your coaches’ instructions,” he said. “During my 30 years as a professional, my success was built on discipline and respect for my managers. That is why I still enjoy great relationships with them today.”
West also warned the players against losing focus or succumbing to external pressure during matches. “Follow your coach’s tactics. Don’t listen to the crowd. The crowd can distract you, but your coach will guide you,” he advised.
Concluding his address, Taribo encouraged the team to draw strength from unity and mutual support. “God will give you grace to succeed. If you’re not on the pitch, bless and pray for the one who is. That unity and spirit will bring victory.”
The Flamingos are currently camped at Ibis Hotel in Casablanca, where they held a light training session on Wednesday evening. They are scheduled to play two warm-up matches against New Zealand and Paraguay before traveling to Marrakesh for their Group D fixtures against Canada, France, and Samoa.
The Nigerian girls enter the tournament in high spirits, having won all ten of their preparatory matches, scoring 44 goals without conceding any.
