Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, is set to unveil a groundbreaking Electric Vehicle (EV) public transport system known as the Abia Green Shuttle Service, aimed at modernising the state’s transport network and advancing environmental sustainability.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the initiative was described as a major step toward transforming public transportation and positioning Abia as a leader in sustainable mobility in Nigeria.

“The Abia Green Shuttle Service forms part of Governor Otti’s broader vision for a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly transport system, in line with global best practices and climate action goals,” the statement read.

Ukoha explained that the project underscores the administration’s determination to shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy alternatives.

“Under Governor Otti’s leadership, Abia has chosen to embrace the future beyond petrol, diesel, and CNG,” he noted.

According to him, the state government plans to procure 100 electric buses for operations in Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, with construction of modern transport terminals already underway.

“The first batch of 20 electric buses, along with 10 charging stations—each equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities—will become operational before the end of the year,” he revealed. “A second batch of another 20 buses and 10 charging stations will arrive early next year.”

The statement added that new bus stops in Aba and Umuahia are nearing completion to improve commuter comfort and efficiency, with route mapping currently in progress.

Highlighting the project’s sustainability focus, Ukoha said the transport system would utilise solar energy and battery storage to reduce reliance on the national grid.

“The state’s sustainable transport system will depend largely on renewable energy, thereby cutting emissions and operational costs,” he said.

He added that the initiative would also improve road safety, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth across the state.

Describing the Green Shuttle as a milestone in Abia’s development agenda, Ukoha said, “Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable public transport system is forward-looking and transformative. The Green Shuttle initiative reaffirms his commitment to modernising transportation, protecting the environment, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.”
