President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the Super Eagles for their resounding 4–0 victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, describing the win as a testament to the team’s resilience and commitment to securing Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said the President congratulated the players and technical crew for rekindling hope among millions of Nigerian fans.
“The Super Eagles have shown true Nigerian spirit by keeping our World Cup dream alive. While the journey is not yet over, I join millions of football-loving Nigerians in wishing the team success in the playoffs,” Tinubu said.
“The mood across the country reflects a shared belief that Nigeria deserves to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. As your President, I assure you of the Federal Government’s full support as you strive to qualify. Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too,” he added.
The victory, powered by a sensational hat-trick from Victor Osimhen in Uyo, propelled Nigeria into the African playoffs. Despite the emphatic win, the Super Eagles narrowly missed out on automatic qualification after South Africa defeated Rwanda 3–0 in Johannesburg to top Group C.
Nigeria will now battle through the Confederation of African Football (CAF) playoffs, joining the three best second-placed teams from the nine qualifying groups. The playoffs will feature a semifinal-final format, with winners advancing to an intercontinental playoff for a potential tenth African World Cup slot.
Osimhen’s five-star performance was widely celebrated as the Napoli striker’s brilliance secured Nigeria’s playoff ticket and renewed national optimism ahead of the decisive fixtures.
