The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims linking the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations to an alleged attempt by the military to overthrow the government. The clarification comes amid growing public curiosity following a report published by an online platform suggesting a possible coup attempt.

In a statement released on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, described the publication as “false, malicious, and entirely unfounded.” He noted that such reports are designed to mislead the public and incite unnecessary fear and suspicion within the country.

The DHQ emphasized that there was no plan, attempt, or discussion within the military ranks related to any form of unconstitutional takeover. It stated that the Armed Forces remain steadfast in their loyalty to the constitution and committed to protecting Nigeria’s democratic governance.

According to Brigadier General Gusau, the alleged connection between the cancellation of the Independence activities and a coup attempt was a deliberate attempt by mischief-makers to undermine public confidence in the military institution. He urged Nigerians to disregard the misinformation and avoid spreading unverified claims.

The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring peace, stability, and the security of all Nigerians. It further assured the public that the military remains focused on its constitutional responsibilities and will continue to operate in the best interest of the nation.
