The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly criticized governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for sidelining him in key party decisions, warning that their exclusionary approach could endanger the party’s future.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike expressed dismay over being left out of major consultations despite his significant contributions and longstanding influence within the PDP.
“Have I not said it before that the booby trap you’re setting will consume you? The way these present governors are behaving, they will bury this party,” Wike stated.
The former Rivers State governor questioned the rationale behind his exclusion, noting that his current role as FCT Minister does not diminish his relevance to the party.
“I am the FCT Minister. Does it mean that because I’m no longer a governor, you can hold a PDP stakeholders’ meeting and exclude me, then expect the party to survive?” he asked.
Wike further argued that even without holding a ministerial office, his years of commitment to the PDP should warrant his inclusion in major decisions. “By the role I have played in the PDP till now, is it right to say I cannot be consulted in taking decisions of the party? Certainly not,” he added.
He dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the PDP’s internal troubles, insisting the crises were self-inflicted. “All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it the APC that makes you take wrong decisions? You mean two or three people, because they are governors and receive large allocations, will decide everything and expect others to follow?” he queried.
Wike also accused the party leadership of failing to complete necessary congresses and other preparatory steps ahead of its national convention. “If they do the right thing, will anybody stall the convention? They have not done the congresses and other things that should be in place,” he said.
The PDP has recently been battling deep internal divisions and a wave of defections involving prominent members, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno. The party is also entangled in multiple legal disputes over its upcoming convention.
