Wike Accuses PDP Governors of Arrogance, Warns of Party’s Imminent Collapse

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of running the party with arrogance and impunity, warning that their actions could lead to its total collapse.

Speaking during the October edition of his monthly media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike cautioned that the governors’ disregard for due process and exclusion of key stakeholders in decision-making were pushing the party toward self-destruction.

“The way these present governors are going, they will bury this party,” Wike said. “Are you telling me that because I’m no longer a governor, I cannot be part of PDP decisions? Even if I wasn’t the FCT Minister, with my contributions to this party, I deserve to be consulted. Two or three governors cannot sit somewhere, take decisions, and expect everyone else to follow.”

The FCT minister also declared the party’s forthcoming national convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, illegal. He vowed not to attend any gathering that fails to comply with the party’s constitutional procedures, stressing that doing so would amount to endorsing illegality.

The PDP has been engulfed in internal turmoil ahead of the convention, with rival factions battling for control of the party structure. Recently, PDP chairmen from Imo and Abia States, along with the South-South Zonal Secretary, filed a suit seeking to stop the convention until pending legal issues are resolved.

Wike’s loyalist, the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, also petitioned the Department of State Services, the Inspector General of Police, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, alleging the forgery of his signature on documents related to the convention.

Wike condemned the exclusion of major stakeholders from key party decisions and accused some governors of manipulating the process to dominate the party. He stressed that the PDP’s woes were self-inflicted and not caused by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“You sideline certain people and take unilateral decisions, what do you expect? You will create factions,” he said. “You haven’t conducted proper congresses for delegates, yet you want to rush into a convention. That’s not due process.”

When asked if he would attend the convention, Wike replied, “If it’s a proper convention, I will attend. But I won’t go to any gathering built on illegality.”

He concluded by warning that the continued marginalization of influential party members and the concentration of power in the hands of a few governors could spell disaster for the PDP.
