Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday distributed N460 million in cheques to 1,000 vulnerable residents at the Blue Roof, Agidingbi Road, Ikeja.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, presented the cheques to beneficiaries of the Financial Assistance Programme, popularly known as Eko Cares, organised by the Office of Political, Legislative & Civic Engagement.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the initiative underscores the true essence of governance—providing comfort, hope, and opportunities to those who need them most. “This presentation to over 1,000 vulnerable Lagosians is not just a ceremony; it is a celebration of compassion and shared humanity. Progress is not only measured by infrastructure or numbers, but by how deeply we care for one another,” he stated.

He added that the programme strengthens the social contract between government and citizens, fostering trust, empathy, and inclusion. “Our administration remains committed to a Lagos where compassion guides policies, hard work meets opportunity, and no citizen is left behind,” he said.

The governor assured that the disbursement is part of an ongoing effort, promising that more beneficiaries will receive support before the end of the year. “In 2024, we disbursed N1.1 billion to 2,477 residents across the state. This year, we have set aside N1.6 billion to assist an additional 2,850 residents, with more programmes still running,” Sanwo-Olu said, highlighting the initiative’s impact in improving livelihoods and restoring hope.

In his welcome address, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative & Civic Engagement, described Eko Cares as a demonstration of Lagos State Government’s commitment to compassion, equity, and empowerment, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to thrive.
