Chaos at Davido’s Enugu Concert: Fans Decry Overcrowding, Theft, and Harassment Amid Security Breakdown

What was meant to be an electrifying Afrobeats night at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, descended into chaos as thousands of fans faced overcrowding, harassment, and theft during Davido’s concert on Saturday, November 1.

The show was part of the singer’s ongoing “5ive Tour,” which kicked off in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on October 26, continued in Yola, Adamawa, on October 29, and made its third stop in Enugu before heading to Ibadan on November 9 and Lagos on December 25.

While earlier stops reportedly ran smoothly, the Enugu leg quickly turned sour. Fans took to TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to recount distressing experiences, including poor security, gate breaches, and widespread theft. Many described the event as unsafe and chaotic, with over 40,000 people crammed into a venue meant for 20,000.

Several attendees said the concert, scheduled for 4 p.m., saw Davido arrive around 3 a.m. — nearly 12 hours late — worsening tensions among the restless crowd.

A TikTok user, #adis_beautification, described how security collapsed: “Those without tickets entered after breaking the gate. The guards did a terrible job. Touts came in and used razor blades to tear bags. Many girls were robbed. My phone was stolen.”

Another attendee, #hairz_by_steph, recounted harassment incidents in the overcrowded arena. “They were pressing girls’ breasts and buttocks. The crowd was too much. I lost my nails trying to protect myself. A man beside me kept trying to steal from my bag,” she said.

#mmachukwu, who attended with her siblings, said the experience was terrifying. “People were falling, and security was using canes and tasers on fans. It was like a stampede. The gates were forced down, and security just gave up. If I hadn’t held my sister, she would have been trampled,” she said.

Inside, she added, “The heat and suffocation were unbearable. We had to move toward the fence just to breathe. It was unsafe.”

Other videos shared online showed similar distressing moments — from attempted wig thefts to people losing their belongings in real time. One attendee, #reallifestories, tearfully revealed that she lost her wig, shoes, phone, and bag, saying, “A stranger had to give me clothes and slippers to go home. It’s not fair.”

Many social media users condemned the organisers for negligence, calling for stricter crowd control and better safety measures at concerts.

“It’s 2025 — there’s no excuse. Event organisers must start prioritising safety, especially for women,” one user, @Gidi_Traffic, wrote on X.

As of press time, neither Davido nor the concert organisers had issued an official statement addressing the incidents.
