Lagos Targets 10,000 Electric Buses by 2030 in Major Green Transport Drive

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced plans to introduce 10,000 electric buses across the state by the year 2030, as part of an ambitious push toward sustainable urban transportation.

In a statement issued on Sunday, LAMATA revealed that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Greenplinth Africa Limited to fast-track Lagos State’s transition to a low-carbon public transport system. The collaboration, endorsed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is focused on developing and managing carbon assets under a broad “green and climate action initiative.”

According to LAMATA’s spokesperson, Kolawole Ojelabi, the partnership supports the agency’s vision of deploying 10,000 electric buses — a goal that would make Lagos a leading example of sustainable mobility in Africa.

“This initiative positions Lagos as the first sub-national government in Africa to undertake such an extensive decarbonisation programme in public transportation,” Ojelabi said.

Under the agreement, Greenplinth Africa Limited will serve as consultants and strategic partners, spearheading the creation of a comprehensive carbon credit framework for current and future transport projects. The firm’s responsibilities include designing the carbon financing structure necessary to support the state’s transition to cleaner energy.

The approval, signed by LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, authorizes Greenplinth Africa to immediately commence work aimed at significantly cutting carbon emissions across Lagos’s transport network.

The collaboration will also cover key sectors such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) regulation and corridor expansion, oversight of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue and Red Lines — particularly in electrification and ridership growth — and the development of biogas plants to promote a shift from fossil fuels to biofuels.

Globally, cities and institutions are adopting clean energy initiatives to reduce carbon footprints. In a similar development, the University of Lagos announced plans to cut over 120 metric tons of CO₂ emissions by the end of 2025 through its Electric Vehicle Initiative launched earlier this year in partnership with Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services.
