The Rivers State Government has called on filmmakers, producers, and scriptwriters to use their creative platforms to promote and preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the Rivers International Film Festival in Port Harcourt.

Dr. Anabraba said Governor Siminalayi Fubara recognises the cultural and economic potential of tourism, which inspired the government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative to rehabilitate, develop, and rebrand the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach in Borokiri.

> “The Rivers State Government is proud of your contributions in putting our state on the global map through film and the arts. Tourism enhances the economy, adds value to our culture, and creates job opportunities for our youths,” he said.

He revealed that the governor had recently inspected the Ngo-Atlantic-Oyorokoto Road, a vast shoreline the state is developing into a major hub for investors to explore opportunities in the blue economy.

> “We are also planning conservation parks in these pristine areas for both nature protection and recreation,” he added, noting that Oyorokoto’s scenic landscape offers ideal settings for filmmakers.

Dr. Anabraba encouraged filmmakers to document and showcase Rivers State’s traditions, values, and history, saying such works will serve as cultural archives for future generations.

In her remarks, the Team Lead of the Rivers International Film Festival, Lady Kate Ezeigbo, expressed appreciation for the government’s continued support. She announced that the 2025 edition of the festival will run from October 30 to November 2, featuring 272 films from various countries.

According to her, the festival aims to promote creativity, empower filmmakers, and strengthen collaborations across Africa and beyond.

> “Since its inception, the Rivers International Film Festival has provided a platform for producers, actors, directors, students, and industry professionals to connect, learn, and celebrate creativity,” she said.

The delegation also included international filmmakers, including representatives from the Zimbabwean National Army.
