Trump’s Military Threat to Nigeria ‘Unprecedented and Dangerous,’ Says Security Analyst

Security and Policy Analyst, Dr. Kabir Adamu, has described U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threats of military action against Nigeria as a grave violation of international norms and a troubling escalation of diplomatic tensions.

Adamu’s reaction followed Trump’s statement accusing Nigeria of allowing the “mass slaughter” of Christians and threatening to deploy American forces if the attacks continue.

The former U.S. president, who recently returned to office, announced on Truth Social that Nigeria had been reclassified as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution. He claimed “radical Islamists” were responsible for the killings and ordered the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “possible action,” including halting all American aid to Nigeria.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that now disgraced country ‘guns-a-blazing’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists,” Trump wrote.

Dr. Adamu said the rhetoric was both alarming and politically motivated, recalling that Nigeria faced a similar designation during Trump’s first term before it was reversed by the Democratic administration.

“What is shocking is this open threat against a sovereign nation. It goes against the global rules-based order. No country should threaten another without allowing dialogue or verification,” he said.

According to him, Trump’s comments are likely tied to domestic U.S. politics rather than factual intelligence. “He’s appealing to his conservative base by portraying himself as a defender of Christianity worldwide,” Adamu noted.

He urged Nigeria’s government to treat the situation as a national security emergency. “Our risk level should now be classified as extreme. We need to coordinate, de-escalate, and develop proactive strategies to manage this threat. We cannot afford to be passive,” he warned.

Adamu also dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding the issue, stressing that national response should be based on intelligence and diplomacy, not speculation.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Presidency confirmed that President Bola Tinubu is expected to meet with President Trump in the coming days to address the allegations and explore diplomatic solutions to the escalating tension.
