Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen has expressed his determination to lead Galatasaray to greater heights in the UEFA Champions League, declaring that it is time for the Turkish giants to make their mark on Europe’s biggest stage.
After successful stints with Lille in France and Napoli in Italy, the 26-year-old forward returns to the Champions League stage donning Galatasaray’s iconic yellow and red colours. Osimhen, who became a fan favourite during his impressive loan spell in the 2024/25 season, completed a permanent move to the club this summer.
In an interview with UEFA, the Super Eagles striker revealed that he shares the club’s ambition of achieving continental success.
> “I spoke with the president when I arrived, and we agreed that we want to make a statement in the Champions League,” he said. “We’ve dominated the Turkish league for years, but now we want to prove we can compete with Europe’s best.”
Osimhen’s drive reflects the same determination that has defined his remarkable journey from Olusosun, Lagos, to the pinnacle of world football.
> “I came from a very poor background. Olusosun shaped me — it taught me resilience,” he said. “Whenever I go home, I visit to show gratitude and remind the young kids that if I made it, they can too.”
The Nigerian forward also spoke about his deep connection with Galatasaray fans, recalling the warm reception he received upon his arrival in Istanbul.
> “When I landed, thousands of fans were waiting at the airport at 3 a.m. I’d never seen anything like that,” he said. “That kind of passion pushes you to give your all for the badge. I love this club and I’m ready to go through everything with them — the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
Osimhen also paid tribute to his football idol, Didier Drogba, who previously shone at Galatasaray and in the Champions League.
> “Drogba was my football hero. I learned from his game and tried to add some of his qualities to mine,” he said. “But my biggest inspiration in life was my brother — he taught me to hustle and never give up.”
Now, as Galatasaray aim to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite, Osimhen believes the club’s resurgence can restore pride to Turkish football.
> “We are the biggest club in Turkey and one of the biggest in the world,” he added. “Now, we want to prove it in the Champions League.”
