La Liga leaders Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 0–0 draw by Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, allowing rivals Barcelona an opportunity to narrow the gap at the top of the table.

Xabi Alonso’s side now sit five points ahead of Villarreal in second place and six clear of Barcelona, who face Celta Vigo later. Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Madrid struggled to break through Rayo’s resilient defense.

The hosts successfully contained La Liga’s top scorer, Kylian Mbappe, while also keeping Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham quiet throughout the tense Madrid derby.

Still recovering from their midweek Champions League loss to Liverpool, Madrid dropped league points for just the second time this season. “We must continue to grow and improve with constructive self-criticism. This is Real Madrid, we know our standards,” Alonso said after the match.

Rayo started brightly, forcing an early save from Thibaut Courtois through Andrei Ratiu, before Madrid took control of possession. Vinicius saw a close-range effort denied by goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, while Raul Asencio headed wide for the hosts.

In the second half, Jorge de Frutos and Alvaro Garcia came close for Rayo, while Bellingham and Mbappe both missed opportunities to secure victory for Madrid. Substitute Arda Guler nearly snatched the winner in stoppage time, but his shot was deflected wide.

“We’re proud of our effort,” Batalla told DAZN. “We had chances too, and to match Madrid’s quality, we had to work twice as hard.”

The draw leaves Madrid at the top but with Barcelona poised to close in if they win their next fixture.
