At least 500 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging loyalty to the ruling party.

The defectors were received on Sunday by Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar, Executive Director of Technical Services at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Umar, son of former Kano governor and ex-APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, assured the newcomers of full integration and equal treatment within the party.

He commended their “courage to embrace the truth and join the APC, the strongest party in Africa.”

The reception event also marked the launch of the first phase of an empowerment programme initiated by Umar. Held at the Armani Event Centre in Kano, the programme saw more than 3,000 APC supporters benefit from agricultural and economic support items.

A statement by Edwin Olofu on behalf of Dr. Ganduje said beneficiaries were selected from all 44 local government areas of Kano State. The distributed items included tricycles, mini-trucks, fertilisers, herbicides, improved seedlings, solar-powered irrigation pumps, agro-processing machines, and other modern tools aimed at boosting productivity and self-reliance.

Describing the initiative as “just the beginning,” Engr. Umar said more phases were planned, with particular focus on youth and women.

He explained that his commitment to supporting people across Kano State went beyond his Tofa/Dawakin-Tofa/Rimingado Federal Constituency, adding that his efforts were driven by a desire to strengthen communities and deepen APC’s grassroots support.

“We have already begun preparing for the next phase of this empowerment. Anyone who didn’t benefit today should not lose hope, your turn will come,” he assured.

He urged beneficiaries not to sell the items, emphasizing that they were meant to boost livelihoods and agricultural output. He credited several APC leaders, including his father, Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Murtala Sule Garo, Abba Bichi, and Mariya Bunkure, for inspiring his vision.

Beneficiaries described the initiative as timely. One recipient, Aminu Ahmad, who received fertiliser, said the support would help revive farming activities affected by high input costs.

“Fertiliser prices have crippled our farming. Today, we feel rescued. Engr. Umar is truly following in the footsteps of Baba Ganduje,” he said.

Another beneficiary, who received a solar-powered irrigation pump, said it was the first time his community had received such support.

“This is the first of its kind for us. We thank Abba Ganduje and promise to repay good with good,” he said.
