Obiageri Amaechi launched Team Nigeria’s athletics campaign at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games with a silver medal on the opening day.

Amaechi registered a throw of 56.99m, narrowly missing gold by just 0.05m to Nora Monie, who topped the podium with 57.04m. Turkey’s Ozlem Becerek took bronze with a mark of 55.56m, while Nigeria’s national record holder, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, finished fourth at 55.08m.

This medal boosts Nigeria’s overall tally at the Games to 16, comprising six gold, six silver, and four bronze, placing the nation eighth on the medal table.

Amaechi’s silver serves as a welcome redemption after her early exit from the women’s discus at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she failed to advance past the first round. Onyekwere-Lyons also played a key role in Nigeria’s strong performance, narrowly missing the podium with her 55.08m throw.
