The Federal Government has inaugurated a dedicated emergency call centre and ambulance service designed to deliver swift and effective medical response to residents of Cross River State, particularly during flooding, fires, road accidents, and other critical incidents.

At the launch event held on Tuesday at the General Hospital, Calabar, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate—represented by Dr Doubra Emuren, Programmes Manager of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System—said the initiative is targeted at improving access to life-saving medical services for Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable. According to him, citizens can now rely on pre-hospital care and timely ambulance transportation during emergencies.

Dr Emuren explained that the Emergency Medical Treatment Gateway, a component of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund under the National Health Act, was created to ensure that no Nigerian loses their life due to inability to pay for emergency care. He added that the onboarding of the Cross River Emergency Medical Treatment Committee marks the first step in establishing a functional emergency response structure across the state.

He further noted that the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Health and the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, ensuring that every Nigerian can access quality emergency services whenever needed.

Also speaking, Dr David Ushie, Technical Adviser to the Cross River Governor on Universal Health Coverage, said the initiative supports Governor Bassey Otu’s People’s First Agenda. He revealed that a fully equipped call centre with broadband internet, round-the-clock electricity, and trained personnel has been established. Additionally, five ambulances have been deployed, with plans to integrate both public and private ambulance services to ensure inclusive coverage.

Dr Ushie stressed that the state government is determined to guarantee that every resident receives timely emergency care, regardless of their financial situation or location.

In his remarks, Chief Godwin Iyala, Director-General of the Cross River State Health Insurance Agency, described the launch as a welcome milestone that will significantly improve emergency healthcare delivery and address longstanding challenges faced by residents.
