A nationwide political movement calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has gained remarkable momentum, following the bold intervention of the Abia State House of Assembly. The Assembly’s unanimous letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked a wave of similar appeals from federal lawmakers, civic leaders, and concerned Nigerians across the country, creating renewed pressure for a political solution before the court judgment scheduled for November 20, 2025.

Abia Assembly Sparks National Momentum

The turning point came when the Abia State House of Assembly formally wrote to President Tinubu, urging him to order the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu as part of wider efforts to restore peace and stability in the Southeast.
The letter followed a resolution adopted during plenary on November 11, 2025, after a motion of urgent public importance was moved by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustine Okezie (Umuahia East Constituency).

The Assembly stressed that a political approach remains the most effective path toward reconciliation and de-escalation of tensions in the region.

Public reaction was swift and widespread. Analysts described the Assembly’s move as “the most decisive state-level intervention on the matter,” setting off a chain of political responses nationwide.

44 Federal Lawmakers Add Their Voice

Building on the momentum created by Abia lawmakers, 44 serving members of the National Assembly, led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, have jointly addressed a two-page letter to President Tinubu. Their demands include:

1. Directing the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue Kanu’s prosecution, using the constitutional powers vested in his office.

2. Initiating a broad-based political dialogue to address long-standing grievances and foster national unity.

In the letter, the lawmakers emphasised the urgency of national reconciliation and the need to address the security challenges that have affected the Southeast since 2015.

Excerpt from the Lawmakers’ Letter

“Driven by the abiding and urgent need for national reconciliation… and in view of the insecurity that has pervaded the Southeast since late 2015, we respectfully request His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to direct the discontinuance of the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and initiate a constructive political dialogue.”

The bipartisan and multi-regional composition of the signatories underscored the growing national consensus for a political solution.

A Nationwide Appeal for Peace

Since the Abia Assembly’s letter, numerous groups, ranging from civil society organisations and youth coalitions to elder statesmen and religious leaders, have prepared similar appeals. What started as a state-level initiative has now transformed into a nationwide push for de-escalation, justice, and peace.

All Eyes Now on President Tinubu

With calls coming from both state and federal lawmakers, as well as a rising chorus of civic voices, Nigerians are watching to see how President Tinubu responds.
The mounting appeals represent one of the most coordinated pushes for a political solution since the beginning of Kanu’s case, and many believe the President’s next move could significantly influence peace efforts in the Southeast.
