The Abia State Government has commenced the second phase of its public awareness campaign for the “Get Your C-of-O in 30 Days” initiative.
During a press briefing in Umuahia on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije, announced that the programme has achieved unprecedented progress since its rollout.
He revealed that Governor Alex Otti has signed a total of 3,256 Certificates of Occupancy so far, with 1,778 processed in 2025 alone—marking the highest yearly issuance recorded in the state since 1999.
Chukwumerije stated that the initiative is enabling more residents to secure legal land ownership, obtain mortgages, complete property transfers seamlessly, and support their business ventures.
However, he noted that certain applications still encounter delays arising from issues such as inaccurate survey plans, incomplete documentation, late payments, or incorrect information provided by applicants.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the government has fully resumed the enforcement of statutory land charges, including ground rent, in 2025, following waivers granted in the previous two years.
He added that the state is currently undertaking major land-dependent projects, including the proposed Abia Airport, new residential layouts, agro-industrial zones, and power infrastructure. A comprehensive digital mapping of the state is also underway to enhance planning and land administration.
Chukwumerije urged property owners and prospective applicants to take advantage of the streamlined process, emphasizing that it is transparent and requires no intermediaries.
