The kidnappers who abducted 38 worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, have demanded a total ransom of N3.8 billion, asking for N100 million per victim.
The gunmen contacted families of the abducted persons on Thursday, confirming the ransom demand.
A community leader and Olori Eta of Eruku, Chief Olusegun Olukotun, said four of his relatives were among those kidnapped. He disclosed that he was inside the church with five family members when the attack took place at about 6:06 p.m., adding that he managed to escape through a window with one of his wards.
“From what we gathered, the kidnappers have grouped the victims based on family ties and are contacting relatives through those groups,” he said.
Olukotun appealed for stronger security presence in Eruku, a border community, and called for better equipment for local vigilante groups to help withstand future attacks.
Emir of Ilorin Condemns Attack
The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council described the incident as sad, wicked and unpatriotic. He said the attack came at a time when governments at all levels were working to curb banditry and terrorism.
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safe release of the abducted worshippers and prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed.
Governor AbdulRazaq Seeks Urgent Security Reinforcement
Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has requested additional security deployment to Eruku and the wider Ekiti LGA to contain the resurgence of violent attacks.
His request follows Tuesday’s incident, in which masked attackers invaded the church, killing about five people, injuring several others and abducting many, including the pastor.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor condemned the attack and expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and the entire Eruku community.
He said the state government would continue supporting security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for deploying 900 additional troops to Kwara State to boost security operations.
“We have already seen improvements in previously troubled areas. We thank the President for this support and believe the additional troops will enhance security and restore calm,” the statement said.
