The Umuahia North Council of Traditional Rulers has issued a fresh appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to grant a presidential pardon to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The appeal follows the recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja, a ruling the council describes as painful yet unable to diminish their faith in justice.
In a detailed statement signed by the royal fathers and custodians of the ancestral kingdom of Umuahia land, the council reaffirmed that Nnamdi Kanu is not a terrorist but a freedom advocate who has consistently spoken against injustice and marginalisation. They insisted that their son remains innocent of the charges against him and maintained that the court’s decision does not erase the truth known to his people.
The traditional rulers called for calm and urged youths to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. They emphasised the need for unity and restraint while encouraging the public to allow wisdom and patience to guide their actions in this sensitive period.
The council further reminded the nation that Kanu still possesses the constitutional right to appeal the judgment, expressing confidence that justice, though sometimes delayed, ultimately prevails. They appealed to President Tinubu to exercise the prerogative of mercy and release Kanu to his family and community, noting that the prolonged trial has been endured with patience and respect for national laws.
Reaffirming their unbroken spirits, the royal fathers stated that the ancient kingdom of Umuahia land stands firm behind Kanu, describing him as their son, their pride, and a symbol of hope. They extended appreciation to supporters who have remained steadfast throughout the legal battle and vowed to continue speaking and standing until justice is achieved.
The statement was endorsed by the council’s chairman, secretary, vice chairman, treasurer, and patrons.
