Defending champions Bayelsa Queens will begin their 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership campaign against 2024 titleholders Edo Queens in a highly anticipated South-South derby at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, on Wednesday. The season will feature 20 topflight clubs divided into two groups, with early performances expected to set the tone for the race to the title. Bayelsa Queens, who dominated last season’s Super Six to claim the league crown, have historically held the upper hand over Edo Queens, winning four of their last seven encounters, with Edo’s sole victory coming in a narrow 1–0 win during the 2025 Super Six.

Both sides enter the new season boasting experienced squads, including national team players, making the derby a potential early indicator of title favourites. Beyond the headline clash, the season opener features several intriguing fixtures across both groups. In Group A, Adamawa Queens host Pacesetter Queens in Makwada, while Heartland Queens take on Ekiti Queens in Owerri, and Naija Ratels face Ibom Angels in Abuja. Castmog Ladies’ scheduled match with Rivers Angels in Abeokuta has been cancelled following Castmog’s relegation.

Group B promises equally competitive action, with Nasarawa Amazons welcoming Delta Queens in Lafia, and Confluence Queens taking on Abia Angels in Iyamho in a clash expected to be fast-paced. Sunshine Queens face Robo Queens in Akure, while debutants Ahudiyannem Queens meet Remo Stars Ladies in Abiriba in a meeting of two CAF-A licensed coaches. Dannaz Ladies will host newly promoted Osun Babes in Lagos, with both teams eager to build early momentum.

With new teams entering the topflight, reinvigorated rivalries, and tactical improvements across squads and coaching staffs, the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership promises drama, high-level competition, and an exciting start from the very first whistle. Fans can expect a season filled with intense battles for supremacy in Nigerian women’s football.
