Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the death of Super TV CEO, Michael Ataga, told the Lagos State High Court yesterday that she regrets his passing.

Ojukwu made the statement while testifying before Justice Yetunde Adesanya at the Tafawa Balewa Square division of the court. She is standing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and Adedapo Quadri on charges bordering on murder, conspiracy and stealing.

During cross-examination by prosecuting counsel, Y.A. Sule, Ojukwu was questioned about the phones and MacBook recovered from her at the time of arrest and her level of knowledge about digital devices. She was also confronted with claims that the gadgets belonged to Ataga.

The court heard that Ojukwu and Ataga were lodged together at a short-let apartment in Lagos, where the businessman was later found dead.

The prosecution tendered two receipts allegedly showing transactions between Ojukwu and Phone Hub, a store where she was said to have swapped her iPhone. Ojukwu denied prior knowledge of the documents but admitted selling her MacBook Pro at the outlet for ₦495,000, which was paid into her Sterling Bank account.

The defence, led by Onwuka Egwu, objected to the tendering of the receipts, arguing that they were not disclosed earlier and amounted to an ambush. Justice Adesanya overruled the objection and admitted the documents as evidence.

Ojukwu told the court that the MacBook was a birthday gift, and the person who gave it to her also provided the receipt. When asked if the transaction occurred after Ataga’s death, she said it was completed a few days after she left the apartment.

She acknowledged that she used the phone recovered by police after leaving the scene, but denied leaving with Ataga’s gadgets. She also said she was not the last person to see him alive.

When asked directly if she regretted Ataga’s death, she responded: “I regret that he died.”

Ojukwu described herself as a 300-level Mass Communication student with no IT expertise prior to her arrest. She is the first defence witness, and her lawyers intend to call at least four more. The prosecution had earlier presented over ten witnesses since the case began in 2021.

The trial was adjourned to February 9, 10, 17 and 23, 2026.
