The first-ever Renewed Hope Ikeja Federal Constituency Basketball Championship officially began on Monday at the Police College court in Ikeja, featuring 18 teams from across the constituency’s political wards vying for top honours and substantial cash prizes.
Sponsored by Olawale Fadare, personal assistant on general duties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and supported by the Young Professionals for Tinubu network, the championship aims to provide constructive engagement and empowerment for young people through sport.
During the jersey presentation ceremony, Francis Nkwo, leader of the House in Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, encouraged players and officials to maintain discipline and uphold fair play throughout the tournament. Tournament coordinator Kenneth Agba assured participants of a well-organized and competitive event, noting that sponsors hope the championship will serve as a stepping stone for players’ sporting careers.
The week-long event, running from November 24 to 30, will award N500,000, N300,000, N200,000, and N100,000 to the top four teams, with each of the remaining 14 teams receiving N50,000. Participating teams include Ebun Comets, Hoops and Read Cantonment, Police Baton, Heat Kings, Bobcats, Raptors, Senators, Lite Academy, Warriors, Warlords, Estate King, Rookies B, Ogudu GRA, WASCOM, Rookies, Sport Nation, and Leo Kareem Academy. Organisers also plan additional activities, including a slam dunk contest, three-point shooting challenge, dance and DJ sessions, a youth talent showcase, and a raffle draw.
