Trump Sends Peace Envoy to Moscow as Ukraine Talks Continue Amid Russian Strikes

US President Donald Trump has directed his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to travel to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. The move follows a US-backed 28-point proposal, which Trump says has been “fine-tuned” with only a few points of disagreement remaining.

Trump emphasized on social media that he hopes to meet both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once the deal is in its final stages. Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to advance the plan but wants further discussions with Trump and European leaders on certain elements.

Meanwhile, Russia continued its missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, killing at least six people and disrupting power and heating systems. Residents sought shelter in subzero temperatures, highlighting the urgency for a lasting resolution.

In a recent speech to European allies, Zelenskyy called for a framework to deploy a “reassurance force” and reiterated the need for continued support as long as Russia shows no willingness to end the conflict.

US officials, including Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, have been engaged in talks with Russian representatives, while also planning discussions with Ukrainian officials. The details of these meetings remain unclear.

European leaders have voiced differing views: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged financial support for Ukraine using “immobilised” Russian assets, while French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned that Moscow appears unwilling to negotiate and stressed the need for a strong Ukrainian military.

The US proposal has raised concerns in Kyiv and Western capitals, as some elements would require Ukraine to cede territory, limit its military, and forgo NATO membership, conditions long rejected by Ukraine. Zelenskyy acknowledged the plan includes “correct” points but warned that finalizing the deal may be challenging.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted that any amended plan must reflect the understanding reached between Putin and Trump at their August summit in Alaska.

With Russia’s attacks continuing and Ukraine facing its fourth wartime winter, the pressure on Zelenskyy to reach an agreement remains intense.
