Former Labour Party National Treasurer, Oluchi Oparah, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the stalled $460 million CCTV surveillance project in Abuja, describing the situation as a major national security concern.
In a statement on Saturday, Oparah criticized what she termed the reckless handling of funds allocated to the project, which was designed to strengthen security infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory. She argued that the failure to complete the initiative has worsened insecurity, including the rise in kidnapping and other violent crimes across the city.
Oparah urged the recently set up House of Representatives investigative committee to conduct its assignment with integrity and independence, warning against any attempt to shield those responsible. She stressed that Nigerians are closely monitoring the process and expect full accountability.
She also called for a comprehensive forensic audit of the entire project, including how the funds were disbursed, the status of work reportedly carried out, compliance by contractors, and the overall management of the loan tied to the scheme.
The former party treasurer demanded that the identities of all individuals and agencies involved be made public, insisting that any misappropriated funds should be recovered. She further said that contractors who failed to meet their obligations should be compelled to refund the money so the project can be properly completed, warning that continued lack of transparency could further undermine public trust and investor confidence.
