The Abia State government has announced that the Abia State College of Education, Technical, Arochukwu, has secured renewed accreditation for 24 academic programmes that previously lost their status under the last administration.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed this during the November edition of his monthly media interaction, “Governor Otti Speaks to Abians,” noting that the institution is also undergoing major infrastructural upgrades. He said ongoing works include the construction and rehabilitation of internal roads, hostels, lecture theatres, and classrooms, all aimed at creating a better environment for training future teachers.
The governor further revealed that new buildings recently completed at the permanent site of the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, will soon be commissioned. He added that the polytechnic has been playing a supporting role in the state’s development initiatives, including the local production of refuse bins used by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency across the state.
According to Otti, students of the institution are actively involved in manufacturing the waste buckets seen in neighbourhoods statewide, describing the partnership as an example of practical skills training contributing directly to governance and service delivery.
The governor also announced the imminent deployment of newly arrived electric buses, which he said would help reduce transportation costs for residents once put into operation.
On land administration reforms, Governor Otti disclosed that his government has issued 30,562 Certificates of Occupancy within the past two and a half years — a record the governor said surpasses the output of several states over much longer periods. He explained that the achievement was made possible through the automation of the CofO process, aimed at unlocking property value and improving ease of doing business in Abia State.
