Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, on Thursday paid a visit to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre in Sokoto State.

During the meeting, Governor Otti encouraged Kanu to remain resolute, noting that efforts towards securing his release, which began over two years age, have been intensified despite challenges encountered along the way. He assured Kanu that the process remains active and that his freedom is being pursued through administrative channels.

The Governor also expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shares similar views regarding the need to ease tensions and find a lasting resolution to the matter. He further disclosed that the Sultan, in a lighter conversation, jokingly referred to Kanu as his subject and hinted about turbanning him, an exchange that drew laughter from the IPOB leader.

In response, Kanu, who appeared in high spirits, thanked Governor Otti for the visit and said he was not surprised by the gesture, recalling previous instances when the Governor had also reached out. He commended Otti’s achievements in Abia State, comparing his developmental focus to that of the late Governor Sam Mbakwe of the old Imo State. He urged Otti to remain committed to good governance and the welfare of the people.

Kanu reiterated that his concerns have always centred on development, equity, and the well-being of the people. He also offered prayers for the Governor and his administration.

Governor Otti was accompanied by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN; Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma; and senior Sokoto State officials, including commissioners and advisers. Also present was Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu.
