“IPOB Lawyer Warns Senate: Confirming Omokri as Ambassador Would Betray Nigeria’s Integrity”

A prominent human-rights lawyer, representing Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has urged the Senate to reject the ambassadorial nomination of Reno Omokri, calling the decision a grave misjudgment that could tarnish Nigeria’s international image. He described Omokri’s nomination as “profoundly unwise,” arguing that the nominee’s history of inflammatory social-media commentary reflects a lack of the decorum and neutrality expected of a diplomat.

The lawyer singled out what he termed Omokri’s “ethnic bigotry,” particularly repeated derogatory remarks directed at members of the Igbo ethnic group, as evidence that he is unsuitable to represent Nigeria abroad. He said that elevating someone with such a public record of divisive statements to a diplomatic role would be a “national embarrassment.”

He also raised concerns about the political symbolism of granting high office to someone who once fiercely criticized the administration — including the current president — warning the nomination signals that partisan attacks are rewarded rather than held to account.

Given this background, the lawyer called on members of the Senate — especially those from the Igbo community — to reject the nomination. He argued that while a spokesperson role might better suit someone like Omokri given his contentious public profile, the dignity of diplomacy demands far higher standards of integrity and respect.
