Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, has lauded the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for its peaceful conduct, discipline and orderly management of motor parks across the state, describing the union as a critical partner in maintaining harmony within the transport sector.

Dr. Ukaegbu gave the commendation on Thursday at the union’s end-of-year party and mega empowerment programme held at its headquarters in Ohiya Park, Umuahia, where over 500 bags of rice were distributed to members.

The Commissioner praised the leadership of the NURTW for fostering inclusiveness by carrying other transport unions along, noting that such leadership has helped to entrench peace and stability in Abia’s motor parks. He observed that the current calm atmosphere, free from the clashes and violence previously associated with motor parks, aligns with the Abia Serenity Agenda of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

He expressed appreciation to the State NURTW Chairman, Comrade Chukwuma Azode, for the union’s consistent support for the state government and urged members to sustain their cooperation with the present administration. Dr. Ukaegbu also cautioned drivers against reckless driving, driving against traffic and other unsafe practices capable of endangering lives.

The Commissioner stated that he was proud to have facilitated the return and proper engagement of the NURTW within the state’s transport framework, adding that the union has justified that decision through its exemplary conduct. He assured transport workers that the state government would continue to involve them in key policies and projects, including the introduction of electric buses, development of transport terminals and water transport initiatives.

Commending the empowerment programme, Dr. Ukaegbu described the distribution of over 500 bags of rice as a notable display of leadership and compassion, noting that the gesture reflects the union leadership’s commitment to the welfare of its members.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Hon. Obioma Nwogbe, applauded the NURTW leadership for sustaining peace and discipline, describing the empowerment initiative as timely and impactful.

Earlier in his address, Comrade Chukwuma Azode thanked members for their good conduct and peaceful disposition throughout the year, explaining that the rice distribution was aimed at rewarding loyalty, promoting unity and reaffirming the union’s commitment to members’ welfare.

He commended the Commissioner for Transport for serving as a dependable link between the union and the state government and reaffirmed the NURTW’s unwavering support for Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Comrade Azode also praised the state government for improved road infrastructure and enhanced security across highways and major routes, noting that these efforts have eased transportation, reduced vehicle maintenance challenges and boosted public confidence.

The State NURTW Chairman assured members that more welfare initiatives would be introduced to reward diligence and commitment. He urged members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and cautioned drivers against reckless driving, drinking and driving, and other forms of misconduct, while calling for continued cleanliness, peace and unity in motor parks in line with the development vision of the Abia State Government.
