Individuals arrested during a pro-Biafra protest demanding the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, appeared on Thursday at a magistrate court in Kuje, Abuja, to face charges linked to the October 20 demonstration.
The protesters said they were arrested, detained, and subjected to degrading treatment for participating in what they described as a peaceful civil protest. According to them, the gathering was aimed at exercising their constitutional rights to freedom of expression and assembly, as well as voicing opposition to government actions.
Speaking through a joint statement at the court premises, the defendants maintained their innocence, insisting that their actions did not breach any law. They described their court appearance as a stand for democratic values and the right of citizens to disagree with those in authority without fear of persecution.
The group called on the judiciary to uphold justice and fundamental human rights, stressing that peaceful protest remains a cornerstone of democracy. The case has been adjourned to a later date, as legal proceedings continue.
