The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has cancelled millions of dollars in federal grants previously awarded to the American Academy of Pediatrics, affecting programs focused on reducing sudden infant death, improving adolescent health, and early autism detection.
Officials said the grants were rescinded because they no longer align with the department’s updated priorities under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has clashed with the AAP over vaccine and child health policies.
The AAP, representing tens of thousands of pediatricians nationwide, confirmed that seven major grants were abruptly terminated this week. The organization warned that the funding cuts could significantly impact essential child and family health services across the country.
Critics argue the decision may disrupt evidence-based pediatric programs and worsen existing challenges in child healthcare, raising questions about the future of federally supported child health initiatives.
