Former Senate President and ex-chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Reconciliation Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has expressed optimism that the party’s internal divisions will be resolved in the coming months, paving the way for a strong political comeback.
Saraki gave the assurance on Friday at a youth summit organised by the PDP at the Alca Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, held to mark his 63rd birthday.
He disclosed that discussions were ongoing between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the two factions of the party, describing the engagement as a significant step towards restoring unity.
Addressing a gathering largely made up of youths and party leaders, including PDP factional national chairman, Kawu Baraje, and representatives of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, Saraki said concerted efforts were being made to harmonise the factions.
“As I speak with you, the two factions of the PDP are meeting with INEC. That tells you that things are beginning to happen,” he said. “I want to assure you that the future is very bright. In a few months, we shall become one indivisible party.”
Saraki urged party members to remain committed and play their roles in rebuilding the PDP, stressing that he had no preferred candidates for any elective position.
“Let us work together to deliver for the PDP. I have no favoured aspirant; everyone is free to contest and represent the party,” he said, calling on members to focus on collective progress at both state and national levels.
He maintained that the PDP remained strong and vibrant despite its challenges, adding that all outstanding grievances would soon be resolved.
Saraki also commended party elders for their steadfast support while emphasising the importance of youth participation in the party’s future.
“It is a marriage of the old and the young in the PDP. We must nurture and guide the youths because they are the future,” he said.
He cautioned members, particularly the youth, against engaging in propaganda that could further harm the party’s image, assuring them that the PDP would overcome its internal problems.
“We are not leaving the PDP, and PDP is not going anywhere. Together, we will build a better party and a better Nigeria,” Saraki said.
