The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Federal Government to halt the implementation of recently gazetted tax reform laws over concerns that the final documents may not reflect what was duly passed by the National Assembly.
In a statement, the association warned that implementing the laws amid unresolved questions surrounding their legislative authenticity could undermine the rule of law and weaken public trust in democratic institutions. The NBA stressed that strict adherence to constitutional procedures is essential for maintaining legal certainty and governance credibility.
The legal body further demanded a thorough, transparent investigation to determine whether unauthorised changes were made to the tax laws after legislative approval. According to the NBA, any discrepancies must be clearly identified and addressed before enforcement begins.
The association insisted that suspending the laws pending the outcome of the probe would help prevent confusion among taxpayers, protect investor confidence, and avert potential legal disputes.
The NBA’s position aligns with broader concerns raised by other stakeholders who have questioned the integrity of the legislative process surrounding the new tax reforms and called for greater accountability and openness from relevant authorities.
