Nigeria has emerged as the top African supplier of crude oil to the United States in 2025, exporting about 33.23 million barrels of oil worth $2.57 billion to American ports between January and August. The figure represents more than half of all African crude exports to the U.S. during the period.
Data on crude shipments show that Nigeria’s exports outpaced those of other African producers, including Angola, Libya, and Ghana, reinforcing the country’s dominant position in trans-Atlantic crude trade this year.
Industry analysts attribute the strong performance to the continued appeal of Nigeria’s light-sweet crude, which is well suited for U.S. refineries and benefits from established shipping routes and long-standing trade relationships.
However, analysts also note that Nigeria’s expanding domestic refining capacity could reshape future export patterns, as more locally produced crude may be redirected to meet internal demand rather than overseas markets.
