The Nigerian Academy of Science has raised serious concerns over the escalating departure of scientists and researchers from Nigeria, warning that this trend could severely undermine the nation’s capacity for research and development.

Dr. Oladoyin Odubanjo, the Academy’s Executive Secretary, stated that while the migration of health professionals is widely acknowledged, the exodus of researchers in science and technology fields has been largely overlooked. Many young scientists are leaving the country to pursue better career opportunities abroad, a development that could stall scientific progress if not addressed.

According to Odubanjo, research thrives on collaboration between experienced and junior researchers, and losing this talent pool could weaken Nigeria’s research ecosystem. He emphasised that without sufficient manpower, meaningful scientific work and innovation will be difficult to sustain.

However, he expressed cautious optimism that with improved policies, better research funding access, and effective strategies to retain skilled professionals, Nigeria’s research sector could recover and grow in the coming years.
