Football’s rule‑making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), is set to discuss proposals that would broaden when a defender can be shown a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring chance. Currently, a red card is typically shown if a player fouls an opponent who is clearly about to score.
Under the proposed changes, the red card could apply not just when a player on a clear run to goal is stopped, but also in situations where a defender stops a move that could have led to a teammate scoring — for example, in a fast counter‑attack.
IFAB is also considering removing automatic bookings in cases where a denial of a scoring chance occurs but the attacking team still scores under advantage.
These potential amendments will be reviewed at IFAB’s annual meeting in London, and if approved, could take effect for the 2026–27 season, with competitions able to adopt the changes sooner.
